Production Chemist (Levels I, II, III) - Peptide Manufacturing

About the role

PolyPeptide is looking for a Production Chemist (Levels I, II and III) in Torrance, California, to support the manufacture of high-quality Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) in a cGMP-regulated environment. The work covers upstream peptide synthesis and downstream purification, with a clear growth path from entry-level to senior technical leadership.

Key responsibilities

• Execute batch production records (BPRs) accurately, in line with SOPs and GxP requirements
• Operate and monitor reactors, drying systems, purification HPLCs and lyophilization
• Perform in-process controls (IPC) and interpret analytical results such as HPLC and ninhydrin tests
• Maintain material handling, inventory and ERP documentation following ALCOA+ principles
• Keep safety, cleanliness, PPE use and 5S standards high
• Work with QA, QC, Maintenance, Engineering and Supply Chain
• Level I: learn cGMP operations under general supervision
• Level II: troubleshoot deviations, support investigations, CAPAs and quality documentation, mentor Level I staff, take part in tech transfers and scale-up
• Level III: act as subject matter expert, make go/no-go decisions with Quality, lead troubleshooting and process optimization, and support production planning and forecasting

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline, or high school diploma with significant GMP manufacturing experience (Level I)
• Level I: 0-2 years of relevant experience (peptide manufacturing preferred)
• Level II: 3+ years in a regulated environment
• Level III: 5+ years with demonstrated leadership and technical expertise
• Ability to handle hazardous chemicals, wear respirators and PPE, and stand, walk and lift up to 25 lbs regularly
