Produce Clerk

About the role

Hy-Vee is hiring a Produce Clerk in its produce department, an hourly position that keeps the department stocked, fresh and inviting. The clerk greets customers, checks product quality, rotates stock, handles deliveries and provides friendly service. Training is provided, and the role suits someone who enjoys staying active and working as part of a team.

Key responsibilities

• Greet every customer with a smile, assist them with their needs and go the extra mile
• Review the status and appearance of merchandise for freshness, replenish and rotate product
• Develop or follow a production list and anticipate daily product needs
• Check in product, put product away and review invoices as needed
• Prepare, finish and replenish product
• Follow sanitation procedures, keep the work area clean and remove trash
• Order product and supplies and price products for customers as needed
• Answer the phone promptly and provide friendly service to callers
• Pitch in with other tasks or special projects

Required profile

• Less than a high school diploma or equivalent experience accepted
• Six months or less of similar or related work experience; training provided
• Commitment to Hy-Vee's mission and a genuine passion for helping customers
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions carefully and with attention to detail
• Ability to safely use sharp knives and blades, and exposure to heat and burn hazards
• Ability to operate a delivery vehicle in accordance with DOT standards

Required skills

• Basic math skills including simple addition, subtraction, counting and recording
• Clear communication with customers and co-workers
• Learning and applying proper sanitation, food safety and department procedures

The work environment is fast-paced, with frequent exposure to temperature extremes, dampness, moving equipment, electrical equipment and cleaning chemicals. Employment is contingent upon a pre-employment drug screen.
