Principal Software Engineer - Trusted Data Platform

About the role

Atlassian is hiring a Principal Software Engineer for its Trusted Data Platform, a full-time position focused on backend storage. As a technical leader and hands-on contributor, you will design and optimize high-scale, distributed storage systems built on AWS storage technologies, shaping the architecture, performance and reliability of storage solutions that power critical applications at scale.

Key responsibilities

• Design, implement and optimize backend storage services with high throughput, low latency and fault tolerance
• Work with senior engineers, architects and cross-functional teams to improve scalability, availability and efficiency
• Lead technical deep dives, architecture reviews and root cause analyses for storage performance, consistency and durability issues
• Drive best practices in distributed system design, security and cloud cost optimization
• Mentor senior engineers, contribute to technical roadmaps and help shape the long-term storage strategy
• Collaborate with Site Reliability Engineers on observability, monitoring and disaster recovery
• Advocate for automation, IaC and DevOps, using Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, Kubernetes (EKS) and CI/CD pipelines

Required profile

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field
• 8+ years of backend software development experience, 5+ years with AWS storage services
• Experience leading engineering teams, mentoring senior engineers and driving technical roadmaps

Required skills

• AWS storage services (S3, DynamoDB, EBS, EFS, FSx, Glacier)
• Distributed systems, replication, sharding, caching and consistency models; Raft, Paxos, Gossip Protocol
• Backend languages such as Kotlin, Java, Go, Rust or Python
• IaC (Terraform, AWS CDK, CloudFormation), Kubernetes (EKS), CI/CD (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, ArgoCD)
• Observability tools such as CloudWatch, Prometheus, OpenTelemetry, Grafana
• Security, encryption, IAM and compliance (SOC2, GDPR, HIPAA)
