Principal / Senior Principal Scientist - Investigative Toxicology
roche · South San Francisco
Job description
About the role
Genentech's Investigative Toxicology group within the Translational Safety department works on the mechanisms behind toxicities of novel therapeutics, from drug discovery through clinical development, using in vitro and ex vivo approaches. The group seeks an experienced individual contributor to drive predictive and mechanistic safety capabilities for the Neuroscience and Cardiovascular, Renal, and Metabolic (CVRM) portfolios, in newly established areas of emerging therapeutic modalities.
Key responsibilities
- Serve as the primary Investigative Toxicology subject matter expert on discovery and early development projects, helping identify rate-limiting safety liabilities early and influencing candidate selection
- Partner with Project Team Toxicologists, Discovery Scientists and Pathologists to guide nonclinical safety strategies and mechanistic de-risking plans
- Establish, qualify and execute hypothesis-driven preclinical safety roadmaps for emerging modalities such as advanced biologics, nucleic acid therapies, cell and gene therapies and multi-specifics
- Lead matrixed experimental studies with laboratory staff, ensuring data integrity, electronic laboratory notebook documentation and publication-ready reports
- Work with the Predictive Toxicology group to build translatable, predictive workflows and co-develop human-relevant cellular systems such as organ-on-a-chip, microphysiological systems, iPSC-derived models, high-content imaging and toxicogenomics
- Represent Genentech in external consortia (e.g., HESI, IQ Consortium, NC3Rs) and lead publication efforts on New Approach Methodologies (NAMs)
Required profile
- Principal Scientist: Ph.D. with 3-5+ years of postdoctoral or industry experience; Senior Principal Scientist: Ph.D. with more than 5 years of industry experience
- Proven track record in drug discovery/development, identifying and de-risking rate-limiting liabilities
- Prior experience with emerging therapeutic modalities and custom preclinical safety strategies
- Ability to lead by influence in a matrixed environment and to represent Genentech in external consortia
Required skills
- Mechanistic understanding of safety assessment, cellular pathways and organ-level physiology for Neuroscience and/or CVRM
- Familiarity with in vitro models, microphysiological systems, iPSC technologies, high-content assays and multi-omics
- Experience collaborating with computational biologists and predictive modelers
- Statistical and data visualization tools such as GraphPad Prism, Spotfire, JMP, R or Python
What we offer
- Salary range of $141,500-$262,900 (Principal Scientist) and $173,100-$321,500 (Senior Principal Scientist) depending on location and experience
- A discretionary annual bonus may be available
- Relocation assistance benefits are available for this posting
