Principal Scientist, Small Molecule Biomarkers (Metabolomics & Lipidomics)

About the role

Genentech Research and Early Development (gRED) is looking for a Principal Scientist in Small Molecule Biomarkers (Metabolomics & Lipidomics) within its Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics (DMPK) team. The role develops high-throughput mass spectrometry workflows and applies modern tools, including Generative AI, to advance safe and effective therapeutics.

Key responsibilities

• Design and apply LC-HRMS and LC-MS/MS methods to obtain high-quality mass spectrometry biomarker data for drug discovery and development.
• Prepare and run global and targeted metabolomics and lipidomics protocols on biofluids, tissues and cells.
• Process mass spectrometry data and perform statistical analysis, building or using Generative AI tools to scale analysis and reporting.
• Oversee bioanalytical quality control using common industry practices and critical analytical reasoning.
• Work with multidisciplinary teams to turn complex omics data into actionable drug target research.

Required profile

• PhD in biological, chemical, pharmaceutical sciences or a related field, with 3-5 years of direct experience in biotechnology or pharmaceuticals.
• Proven experience designing and running assays for endogenous small molecule metabolites or lipids, including precipitation, liquid-liquid or solid-phase extraction.
• Strong foundation in cellular metabolism and hands-on experience or strong aptitude with Generative AI tools for coding and biological insight.
• Excellent communication and collaboration in multidisciplinary project teams.

Required skills

• Practical experience with LC-MS platforms such as UHPLC, triple quadrupole and high-resolution mass spectrometers.
• Analytical data processing software.

What we offer

• Expected salary range of $143,200 - $265,900 for the California location, depending on experience and qualifications.
• A possible discretionary annual bonus based on individual and company performance.
