Principal R&D Engineer – Shockwave Medical

About the role

Johnson & Johnson is seeking a Principal R&D Engineer to lead the development of innovative medical devices for peripheral, coronary and heart valve diseases. The role involves working on cross‑functional teams from concept through commercialization, focusing on Shockwave Medical’s Intravascular Lithotripsy technology.

Key responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership and manage technology development teams.
• Design and develop products in compliance with Design Control and regulatory requirements.
• Prototype proof‑of‑concept designs, disease models and test methods.
• Collaborate with clinical advisors and Key Opinion Leaders to translate clinical needs into design solutions.
• Manage procurement of new materials, supplier relationships and documentation per the quality system.
• Conduct in‑vitro, in‑vivo, verification and validation testing.
• Support pilot manufacturing processes and contribute to intellectual property generation.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering with 10 years experience, or Master’s with 8 years experience.
• Medical device industry experience, especially with disposable peripheral and coronary devices.
• Strong understanding of materials, component selection, reliability and manufacturability.
• Experience with catheter‑based cardiovascular devices is a strong plus.
• Effective communication, independent work style and ability to manage multiple priorities.
