Principal Machine Learning Engineer - Search & Intelligence

About the role

Atlassian is looking for a Principal Machine Learning Engineer to join its Search & Intelligence organization. The team builds Atlassian's flagship AI products, including agentic search and chat, long-horizon agents and capabilities that enrich the Teamwork Graph, and develops the frameworks, models and infrastructure that accelerate AI feature development across the company. The role is open to Seattle, San Francisco, Mountain View or remote.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the development and implementation of machine learning algorithms and models that power AI across Atlassian's products and services.
• Collaborate with product, engineering and analytics teams to turn business and customer needs into solutions.
• Design system and model architectures and lead rigorous experimentation and evaluation.
• Mentor emerging ML engineers and help shape the company's AI strategy.

Required profile

• Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• At least five years of relevant experience in machine learning, data science or a related discipline.
• Strong communication skills, able to explain data science concepts to diverse audiences.
• A pragmatic, business-focused approach and an agile mindset.

Required skills

• Python and one or more production languages such as Java, Kotlin or TypeScript.
• SQL, Spark and cloud data environments such as AWS or Databricks.
• Building, deploying and scaling ML models on large, complex datasets.
• Nice to have: fine-tuning and optimizing LLMs, embedding and ranking models, and building agentic AI systems.

What we offer

• Base pay for new hires in the US: Zone A $236,700-$309,025, Zone B $213,030-$278,123, Zone C $196,461-$256,491.
