Principal Engineer, R&D

About the role

Johnson & Johnson Vision is seeking a Principal Engineer to lead large equipment automation projects that advance smarter, less invasive vision treatments. You will guide projects from concept through completion, collaborating with cross‑functional teams to deliver innovative solutions that improve eye health.

Key responsibilities

• Manage equipment automation capital projects from business case through closure, including earned value tracking.
• Negotiate contract terms with equipment suppliers and oversee support service agreements.
• Develop requirements, system specifications, qualification protocols, and validation test plans.
• Lead commissioning, testing, and safety activities to ensure reliable equipment performance.
• Collaborate with internal teams to drive technical development and mentor peers.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline (Electrical, Mechanical, Computer, Software, Chemical, or Industrial); Master’s preferred.
• Minimum 10 years of engineering experience, with at least 5 years in advanced automation and equipment qualification.
• Experience in regulated industries such as medical devices or pharmaceuticals.
• Proven ability to deliver projects independently and present business cases.
• Willingness to travel up to 20% domestically and internationally.

What we offer

• Base salary range $117,000 – $201,250 per year
