Principal Data Engineer

About the role

Amgen is looking for a Principal Data Engineer to lead the design, development and implementation of its data strategy. The role involves architecting and overseeing robust data platforms while mentoring and guiding a team of data engineers. It suits someone with a deep understanding of data engineering principles, strong leadership and problem-solving skills.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and implement data architectures and platforms supporting business objectives
• Oversee data pipelines and data integration solutions
• Establish and maintain data governance policies and standards for quality, security and compliance
• Architect and manage cloud-based data solutions using AWS or other preferred platforms
• Mentor the data engineering team and foster a culture of innovation and best practices
• Collaborate with business stakeholders to turn their data needs into technical solutions
• Identify, analyze and resolve complex data challenges and stay up to date with emerging technologies

Required profile

• Doctorate with 2 years of data engineer experience, or Master's with 4 years, or Bachelor's with 6 years, or Associate's with 10 years, or high school diploma with 12 years of data engineer experience
• Proven ability to lead and develop high-performing data engineering teams
• Strong analytical, problem-solving and communication skills, able to work with global, virtual teams

Required skills

• Cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and cloud architecture principles
• Python, PySpark and SQL
• Hands-on ETL performance tuning
• Preferred: data modeling for OLAP and OLTP, Apache Spark, Apache Airflow, Git, CI/CD, unit testing, AWS/GCP/Azure certifications

What we offer

• Annual salary range of $159,422.60 to $215,689.40, depending on skills and experience
