Power Plant Mechanic

About the role

Amentum is hiring a Power Plant Mechanic to maintain all mechanical equipment in a Power Plant under the supervision of the Lead Power Plant Mechanic. The role covers regular and irregular maintenance of generators, troubleshooting and repairs, and works closely with linemen and other infrastructure personnel. The position involves deployment to Antarctica.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain a safe workplace and comply with ASC ESH, waste management and quality assurance requirements
• Perform preventive maintenance on primary, remote site, airfield and emergency generators, and troubleshoot, repair and overhaul generator engines
• Respond to station power outages and equipment failures, and carry a radio or pager for after-hours call-outs
• Complete maintenance records, operating logbooks and databases, and schedule diesel engine/generator operations to maintain a 3000-hour spread
• Coordinate with the Utilities Supervisor for repair and spare parts, and keep inventory accuracy at 98% or better
• Train Power Plant Operators on mechanical equipment and cover operator shifts as required
• Evaluate job hazards and communicate them to staff, and interpret project tasking using design drawings and specifications
• Work with partner companies, the National Science Foundation and military officials, and participate in dormitory chores while deployed

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED
• At least 3 years of experience with diesel-powered generators, marine diesel engines or industrial diesel engines
• Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods, with medical, dental, drug screening and background checks completed
• Valid US driver's license; US citizenship required for facility credentials at this location
• Ability to lift and move equipment and work outdoors in extreme cold

Required skills

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office
• Working knowledge of diesel electric generating equipment maintenance and repair
• Preferred: previous experience with remote polar logistics, 1MW+ diesel engines, field service, Caterpillar documentation (ET, SIS), electrical distribution and switchgear, and Caterpillar 3500/3600 engines
