Power Electronics - Electrical Engineer I
shieldai · Seattle
Job description
About the role
Shield AI is building its next-generation aircraft, X-BAT, and is looking for an entry-level Power Electronics Engineer to help bring its power systems to first flight. You will own a meaningful project on the power architecture critical path, with direct mentorship from senior power and electrical engineers.
Key responsibilities
- Own a power electronics design affecting X-BAT system performance and major flight test milestones, with a senior engineer providing guidance and review.
- Contribute to the full hardware lifecycle: concept development, modeling, worst-case analysis, schematic capture, simulation, prototyping, bring-up, verification, integration and flight test support.
- Design and analyze low-voltage and high-voltage power systems such as DC-DC converters, inverters, motor controllers, battery systems, power distribution and protection circuits.
- Design systems from less than 1 kW to more than 10 kW, balancing efficiency, thermal constraints, EMI/EMC performance and reliability.
- Work with ECAD engineers on PCB layout for power density, thermal performance, EMI mitigation and manufacturability.
- Run hands-on board bring-up, debug, root-cause analysis and validation with oscilloscopes, power supplies, electronic loads and other test equipment.
- Support environmental, stress and qualification testing (HALT, vibration, temperature cycling).
- Collaborate with Mechanical, Embedded, Software, Production and Aircraft teams, and maintain documentation and risk reduction.
Required profile
- B.S. in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
- Strong fundamentals in circuits, electronics and power systems.
- Hands-on experience with power electronics (converters, motor drivers, batteries, high-power systems) through coursework, labs, clubs or internships.
- Participation in an engineering team or club or hands-on project experience.
- Ability to obtain a S//SAR level security clearance is desired.
Required skills
- Familiarity with electrical design tools such as Altium or KiCad.
- Experience with oscilloscopes, power supplies, electronic loads and multimeters.
