Postdoctoral Fellow - Human Genetics (Computational)

About the role

The Department of Human Genetics at Genentech is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Fellow (Computational) to develop and apply novel statistical and computational methods for rare coding variant association in neurodegenerative disease. The fellow will analyse large-scale whole-exome and whole-genome sequencing data from Parkinson's disease and ALS case-control cohorts, and work with experimental neuroscience teams to validate computational findings.

Key responsibilities

• Analyse large-scale whole-exome and whole-genome sequencing data to identify rare coding variants associated with Parkinson's disease and ALS
• Develop methods that integrate protein structural information to map disease-associated variant hotspots within known disease genes
• Build calibrated variant effect models combining multiple lines of molecular evidence
• Work with interdisciplinary teams in human genetics, computational biology and experimental neuroscience across several large cohorts
• Publish scientific or methodological papers regularly

Required profile

• PhD in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Statistical Genetics or a related quantitative field with strong research experience
• Strong scientific publication record
• Experience with large-scale genomic data such as whole-exome or whole-genome sequencing and biobank-scale datasets
• Ability to present complex results verbally and in writing to computational and non-computational audiences
• Able to act as computational lead in cross-functional teams

Required skills

• Demonstrated competence in R or Python for statistical or bioinformatics analyses
• Preferred: experience in rare-variant association testing, protein structure analysis and/or machine-learning-based variant interpretation

What we offer

• Expected salary range of $110,000 to $120,000 for California; actual pay depends on experience, qualifications and location
