Per Diem Respiratory Therapy Intern

About the role

The UHealth System at the University of Miami is looking for a Per Diem Respiratory Therapy Intern. This position provides hands‑on assistance to Respiratory Therapy clinicians while the intern receives on‑the‑job training toward becoming a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) within two years.

Key responsibilities

• Assist RRTs with electrocardiograms, stress tests, and lung capacity measurements.
• Support bronchopulmonary drainage procedures and teach patients breathing exercises.
• Set up and operate non‑invasive ventilators, therapeutic gas delivery devices, environmental control systems, and aerosol generators.
• Collect and handle arterial blood gas specimens following proper technique.
• Educate patients and families about respiratory conditions and disease‑management strategies.
• Monitor patients’ physiological responses to therapy and maintain accurate charts.
• Inspect, clean, test, and maintain respiratory therapy equipment to ensure safety and efficiency.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Enrollment in an accredited Respiratory Therapy program.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association.
• No prior experience required.

Required skills

• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Operation of non‑invasive ventilators.
• Use of therapeutic gas administration apparatus.
• Familiarity with environmental control systems.
• Handling of aerosol generators.
