Per Diem Ophthalmic Technician (OT1)

About the role

The University of Miami’s Bascom Palmer Eye Institute is seeking a Per Diem Ophthalmic Technician (OT1) to support eye‑care services. The role involves performing a wide range of clinical tests, documenting findings in the EMR, and providing patient‑centric care in a fast‑paced ophthalmology environment.

Key responsibilities

• Document patient visit details, chief complaint, history, medications, allergies, and visual acuity in the electronic medical record.
• Conduct and record ocular examinations such as lensometry, manual refraction, visual field testing (Humphrey, VR, Amsler Grid, tangent screen), ocular motility, pupillary evaluation, and intra‑ocular pressure measurements (Goldmann, Tono‑Pen, I‑Care).
• Perform pachymetry, contact lens insertion/removal, color vision, stereopsis, and sensorimotor exams.
• Assist providers with charting, prepare patients for intravitreal injections, and support virtual care encounters.
• Maintain equipment calibration, ensure infection‑control standards, and stock clinical rooms.
• Travel to satellite eye centers and work evenings or weekends as needed.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• At least one year of relevant ophthalmic or eye‑care experience.
• Commitment to patient confidentiality, safety, and university policies.
• Willingness to attend continuing education and participate in clinical research.
