Per Diem Ophthalmic Technician I – Palm Beach Gardens

About the role

The University of Miami’s Bascom Palmer Eye Institute is seeking a Per Diem Ophthalmic Technician I to support patient care at its Palm Beach Gardens facility. This part‑time position involves preparing exam rooms, performing a range of vision tests, and assisting clinicians with eye examinations.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare exam rooms for daily clinical activities and maintain equipment, supplies, and pharmaceuticals.
• Conduct visual acuity, peripheral vision, depth perception, and color perception tests.
• Apply anesthetic, dilating, or medicating eye drops as directed.
• Measure intraocular pressure and axial length using ultrasound equipment.
• Perform field‑of‑vision testing, chart results, and document patient histories.
• Fit hard and soft contact lenses and perform other related diagnostic tests.
• Adhere to university policies, safeguard assets, and handle confidential information responsibly.

Required profile

• High School diploma or equivalent; COA certification preferred.
• Minimum two years of relevant ophthalmic technician experience.
• Strong attention to detail, ability to prioritize under pressure, and willingness to work evenings, nights, and weekends.
• Commitment to the university’s core values and ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

Required skills

• Visual acuity testing (digital system, projector chart, near‑point cards).
• Intraocular pressure measurement.
• Ultrasound axial length measurement.
• Field‑of‑vision testing and charting.
• Contact lens placement (hard and soft).
• Use of hand‑motion, light‑perception, pinhole, and Brightness Acuity Tester techniques.
• Interferometry and manual lensometer operation.
• Microsoft Office proficiency.
