Part-Time School Crossing Guard

About the role

Newtown Township is hiring a part-time school crossing guard. The crossing guard helps children and parents cross the street safely while walking or cycling to and from school, provides visibility for pedestrians and reminds drivers to slow down and follow traffic laws. The position works under the direction of the Chief of Police of the Newtown Township Police Department.

Key responsibilities

• Use knowledge of traffic laws and clear, proper traffic signals to safely guide pedestrians and vehicles across the designated school crossing zones.
• Assess the flow of traffic to decide when to let pedestrians cross.
• Observe and report any incidents or conditions that could be a safety hazard to school children or the guard.
• Communicate with the Newtown Township Police Department about information, problems or concerns related to the school zone.
• Deal courteously with colleagues, school staff and the public, and adhere to safe work practices.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Social perceptiveness and strong eyesight.
• Keen understanding of local traffic laws and regulations.
• Ability to work independently and in line with department policies and procedures.
• Physical ability to walk up to 100 feet, stand or sit for long periods, signal with hands and arms, lift and carry 10 pounds and pull 100 pounds, and see and hear normally with or without correction.
• Ability to work in a field environment exposed to heat, cold, moving vehicles, noise, bad weather and slippery or uneven surfaces.
