Part-Time Public Safety Officer

About the role

Hofstra University, a private university in Hempstead, New York, is hiring a part-time Public Safety Officer (position 898025) who reports to the Director of Public Safety for Operations. Officers provide a visible presence on campus, carrying out proactive patrols, responding to incidents and emergencies, and delivering certified first responder medical assistance. Shifts are assigned by seniority under the collective bargaining agreement, and overtime for special events may be required.

Key responsibilities

• Foot and vehicular patrols of campus buildings, grounds, parking lots and adjacent areas
• Responding to service calls, safety concerns and emergencies such as fire alarms, medical emergencies and suspicious activity
• Providing certified first responder-level medical assistance until EMS arrives
• Assisting with evacuations, lockdowns and emergency notifications
• Preparing incident reports, daily logs and other documentation
• Enforcing university policies through verbal warnings, referrals and follow-up
• Offering safety escorts and monitoring surveillance cameras and access control systems
• Supporting special events and crowd control, and acting as liaison with law enforcement, fire and emergency medical personnel
• Training in de-escalation, CPR, first aid and emergency response

Required profile

• Valid driver's license
• Ability to obtain and maintain a New York State Security Guard license and a New York State First Responder certification
• Able to stand or walk on post about 80% of the shift, lift 20 pounds, climb stairs and work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays and bad weather
• Strong communication skills and composure under pressure
• Preferred: college or university experience, familiarity with Clery Act compliance and Title IX responsibilities
