Orientation and Mobility Instructor

About the role

The State of Illinois, Department of Human Services, Division of Rehabilitation Services (DRS), is hiring an Orientation and Mobility Instructor in Belleville, IL. DRS serves people with disabilities and helps them achieve goals in employment, education and independent living. The instructor works in the Bureau of Customer and Community Blind Services, teaching blind, visually impaired and deaf-blind individuals orientation and mobility skills.

Key responsibilities

• Instruct individuals who are blind, visually impaired or deaf-blind in orientation and mobility skills.
• Teach principles of long cane technique and related elements.
• Assist customers in developing sensory skills so they can travel safely in familiar and unfamiliar surroundings.
• Help customers function independently in travel.

Required profile

• Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis; the state does not sponsor employment visas.
• Bilingual skills are welcome.
• Reasonable accommodation requests during the hiring process require a disability certification from a physician, psychiatrist, school official or the Illinois DRS Vocational Rehabilitation counselor.
