Opto-Mechanical Engineer – Surgical Instrumentation R&D

About the role
At Alcon, the Opto‑Mechanical Engineer will support Surgical Instrumentation Research & Development, applying expertise in opto‑mechanical engineering to design and develop ophthalmic diagnostic and visualization devices.
Key responsibilities
- Apply in‑depth knowledge of opto‑mechanical engineering across mechanical design, optics, material science, precision machining, imaging, illumination, microscope and optical systems.
- Perform opto‑mechanical design including lens barrel and housing, lens bonding, mounting techniques, and conduct thermal, environmental, shock & vibration, system integration and tolerance analyses.
- Conduct design, research, development and process up‑scaling for new medical device products.
- Investigate existing technology and develop new methodologies, materials, machines or processes for ophthalmic device development.
- Design, assemble, align, measure, test, analyze and troubleshoot diagnostic and visualization devices.
- Generate detailed fabrication drawings with GD&T and tolerance analysis.
- Support prototyping, testing, pilot builds, verification & validation, risk assessment and ramp‑up to production release.
- Maintain documentation and design control using PECN, ECN, ECP within the Windchill PLM platform.
- Develop assembly and alignment fixtures and associated manufacturing processes.
- Collaborate with cross‑functional teams including optics, mechanical, electrical, software, QA, industrial design and manufacturing.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in a relevant engineering discipline.
