Ophthalmic Technician – Specialty 1 (Cataract Suite)

About the role

The University of Miami, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, is seeking a full‑time Ophthalmic Technician – Specialty 1 to support the Cataract Suite. The technician will perform specialty‑specific ophthalmic testing, assist physicians during procedures, and ensure smooth patient care workflows.

Key responsibilities

• Perform ophthalmic measurements, diagnostic tests, and specialty procedures according to training and protocols.
• Prepare patients for studies, treatments, or procedures, explaining processes and answering questions.
• Document patient histories, clinical findings, test results, and procedural data in the electronic medical record.
• Operate ophthalmic instruments, imaging systems, and specialty equipment relevant to the cataract suite.
• Assist physicians and care teams before, during, and after examinations or procedures.
• Identify and communicate abnormal findings or technical issues following escalation protocols.
• Maintain exam rooms, procedure areas, and equipment in compliance with safety and infection‑control standards.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) credential.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• At least two years of relevant ophthalmic or clinical experience.
• Professional appearance and strong interpersonal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast‑paced environment.
