About the role
The Office of the Public Defender seeks a detail‑oriented Office Secretary II to provide legal secretarial support for the Circuit and District Court divisions in Washington County, Maryland. The role involves direct interaction with indigent clients, attorneys, and court staff in a fast‑paced environment.
Key responsibilities
- Gather and provide information to clients and their families, both in person and by phone.
- Create client profiles and enter data into the case‑management database.
- File legal documents such as motions, subpoenas, and pleadings using the court filing system.
- Process incoming mail and correspondence, and manage a multi‑line phone system.
- Utilize template forms and documents as requested by attorneys or administrative staff.
- Perform standard clerical tasks including photocopying, faxing, and other office duties.
- Assist with attorney case management and other duties as assigned.
Required profile
- Legal secretarial experience with familiarity of legal terminology.
- Excellent organizational, writing, and problem‑solving abilities.
- Ability to work independently in a high‑volume environment.
- Strong customer‑service background and effective communication skills.
- Proficiency with computer and standard office equipment; reliable transportation or access to public transit.
