Occupational Health Nurse

About the role
The Occupational Health Nurse provides direct care, health assessment and monitoring to employees while supporting occupational health programs across the Smithsonian Institution. The role works closely with staff, management and safety coordinators to maintain a safe and healthy environment for employees and visitors.
Key responsibilities
- Provide direct clinical care, health assessments and ongoing monitoring for Smithsonian employees.
- Support staff, management, employees and safety coordinators in medical monitoring and prevention activities.
- Ensure a safe and healthy work environment for all employees and visitors.
- Participate in preventive health education programs and counseling aimed at disease prevention and health maintenance.
- Counsel individuals to improve chronic health conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, fitness, or obesity.
- Obtain physical assessments and medical histories, identify new health concerns, and provide appropriate counseling, referrals and follow‑up.
- Assist with administrative functions of Occupational Health Services to maintain high‑quality patient care.
Required profile
- Graduate or higher level degree, bachelor’s, associate degree or diploma from an accredited nursing program.
- Current licensure as a registered nurse.
- At least one year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to GS‑09) or an advanced degree (PhD or equivalent) in a related field.
- Specialized experience equivalent to one year at the GS‑09 level in occupational health or related federal service.
- Pass pre‑employment background investigation and any required probationary period.
- Maintain a bank account for direct deposit.
- Males born after 12/31/59 must be registered with Selective Service.
