Motor Pool Technician

About the role

The City of Marquette is seeking a Motor Pool Technician to maintain and repair its fleet of vehicles and related equipment. The role involves preventive maintenance, diagnosing malfunctions, and performing corrective actions under the supervision of the Equipment Maintenance Supervisor.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain records and complete work reports for vehicle and equipment repairs.
• Inspect defective equipment, diagnose issues using analyzers, pressure gauges, testing tools, schematics, and factory manuals.
• Disassemble and overhaul internal combustion engines, pumps, hydraulic systems, generators, compressors, clutches, and differentials.
• Perform routine maintenance such as brake adjustments, welding, steering alignment, torque application, tire‑wheel checks, battery service, and lubrication.
• Install and remove seasonal accessory equipment on vehicles.
• Maintain small equipment (≤4 cylinders, ≤50 hp) and operate heavy equipment for building and grounds upkeep.
• Recommend repairs, test corrective measures, and change fluids and lubricants.
• Observe safety protocols, use PPE, machine guards, and direct traffic in work areas.

Required profile

• Valid driver’s license and a Michigan Class A CDL with Air Brake and Tanker endorsements (obtainable within 180 days of hire).
• Mechanical aptitude and experience in preventive maintenance and equipment diagnostics.
• Ability to work independently or as part of a team and follow written procedures.
