Melt Shop Operator – Production & Operations

About the role

The Melt Shop Operator is responsible for maintaining and stocking consumables for the furnace or caster, performing housekeeping duties, and supporting other furnace operators. The role includes sample collection, data recording, and occasional refractory maintenance.

Key responsibilities

• Unload trucks and stock supplies/consumables.
• Operate temperature and sampling devices for temperature, oxygen, and steel samples.
• Maintain refractory, runner/tap holes, and build/add electrodes.
• Record production data and communicate with team members.
• Perform daily preventative maintenance on vehicles and mobile equipment.
• Operate mobile equipment, including overhead cranes, to move product and materials.
• Execute 5S and general housekeeping activities.

Required profile

• High school diploma, GED or equivalent.
• Ability to read, write and follow instructions.
• Physical ability to lift up to 75 lb, climb ladders, work in extreme temperatures (0 °F‑160 °F) and noisy environments.
• Flexibility to work rotating 12‑hour shifts, including days, nights and weekends.
• At least 1 year of industrial or manufacturing experience, preferably with heavy mobile equipment.

Required skills

• Operation of heavy mobile equipment and overhead cranes.
• Use of temperature and sampling devices for steelmaking processes.
• Basic math and ability to read gauges, dials and specifications.
• Knowledge of electric steel furnace operation and refractory maintenance (preferred).
