Media Relations Specialist – University Communications

About the role

The Media Relations Specialist serves as the primary liaison between Fresno State and external media outlets. You will protect the university’s reputation, promote strategic priorities, and support crisis communications as part of the campus communications team.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and pitch news stories, press releases, media advisories, and news tips to local, regional, and national media.
• Maintain and expand relationships with reporters, editors, and other media contacts.
• Organize and manage press conferences, media briefings, and other public events.
• Maintain the university’s expert directory, connect faculty and staff with media inquiries, and provide media training.
• Participate in the emergency operations center during crises and assist with strategic communication initiatives.

Required profile

• Thorough understanding of media‑relations strategies, copyright law, and accessibility best practices.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a journalistic style.
• Ability to manage multiple writing assignments and meet tight deadlines.
• Proven experience building and sustaining strong media relationships.

Required skills

• Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc.).
• Content management systems.
• Project‑management platforms and databases.

What we offer

• Full‑time, probationary, exempt position with a salary range of $5,877 – $5,994 per month.
