Materials Test Engineer

About the role

Leidos' Defense Systems is seeking a Materials and Process Engineer to join its Advanced Materials Department in Huntsville, Alabama. The department covers materials engineering across R&D, prototype development and design and build support, and the role balances several activities within composites R&D, thermal protection systems and hypersonics.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct mechanical testing of materials and test articles, from test specimens to full-scale items, to support multiple test programs
• Support Leidos programs in composites R&D, thermal protection systems and hypersonics
• Help guide multi-disciplinary research across organizations so it meets program objectives and stays on schedule, covering mechanical testing, manufacturing, composite repair and bonding of dissimilar materials
• Direct testing and reporting for material test programs
• Investigate anomalous test outcomes and recommend resolutions to the program team
• Act as liaison between the program team, technical team and external teams

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Materials, Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering (ABET accredited) with at least 4 years of experience, or an M.S. with 2+ years
• US citizen with a DOD Secret Clearance, or eligible to obtain and maintain one; active clearance preferred
• Resident of North Alabama or willing to relocate to the Huntsville, AL office
• Self-motivated and able to work in a fast-paced environment

Required skills

• Mechanical testing of engineering materials with load frames such as tensile testers and universal testing machines
• Experience with composites and other aerospace materials
• Developing test plans and work instructions and documenting test results
• Familiarity with ASTM or MIL-STD testing standards
• Preferred: instrumentation and data acquisition systems (DAQ), MTS TestWorks Elite, project management skills, and AppKinetic

Pay range: $87,100 - $157,450.
