Manager, GNC and Test Engineering

About the role

Rainmaker is seeking a Manager, GNC and Test Engineering to lead the development and qualification of unmanned aircraft systems that support large‑scale weather modification. The role combines technical direction, performance modeling, and hands‑on flight testing to deliver reliable UAS platforms.

Key responsibilities

• Guide end‑to‑end technical direction of UAS platforms, from requirements through first flight and qualification.
• Develop and maintain propulsion and environmental performance models to size motors, propellers, ESCs and batteries.
• Own GNC architecture, gain tuning, estimator configuration and sensor selection for rotorcraft and fixed‑wing platforms.
• Design, plan and execute structured flight test campaigns, including risk mitigation, envelope expansion and data analysis.
• Lead and mentor the testing and quality‑assurance team, establishing QA processes and standards.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience.
• 5+ years developing unmanned aircraft, with at least one platform taken from concept to qualified flight.
• Hands‑on GNC experience, including PID tuning on multirotor or fixed‑wing aircraft.
• Experience writing and executing flight test campaigns and leading QA functions.
• FAA Part 107 certification; experience with waivers and BVLOS operations preferred.

Required skills

• PX4 or ArduPilot flight stack.
• Propulsion performance modeling (motor RPM, torque, wind/gust analysis).
• GNC tuning and estimator configuration.
• Flight test planning, instrumentation integration, and data analysis.
• Knowledge of UAV components: motors, propellers, ESCs, batteries, GNSS receivers.
