About the role
Moog’s Military Aircraft Group in Torrance, CA is seeking an experienced Machinist III for the 1st shift (6:00 am‑2:30 pm). The role focuses on precision gear and component production for advanced military aircraft such as the F‑35 Lightning II and V‑280 Valor.
Key responsibilities
- Set up, operate, and troubleshoot a variety of manual and CNC machines, including profiling, hones, Gleason reciprocators, generators, milling, turning, drilling, and grinding equipment.
- Plan and execute machining sequences using available tooling to meet production specifications.
- Measure and inspect gears (ID/OD, MOW, MBW) using dyer gauges and CMM reports, ensuring compliance with tight tolerances.
- Maintain accurate documentation of machine settings, tool wear, and production data.
- Collaborate with the Performance Leader and team members to continuously improve process efficiency and product quality.
Required profile
- High school diploma or GED (preferred) with strong ability to read and follow English work instructions.
- Minimum 7 years of shaping machining experience, including Gleason shaper, hobbing, and gear‑cutting machines.
- Proven knowledge of gear making, shaping, and skiving processes.
- Ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations and interpret technical drawings.
Required skills
- Gleason Shaper (P500, GP300) operation and setup.
- Gleason Hobbing Machine (H400) operation.
- Okuma 5‑axis multi‑pallet machine center.
- 5‑axis vertical/horizontal machining centers (Okuma).
- CNC turning centers with live tooling, Y‑axis, and sub‑spindles.
- Swiss‑style lathes (Citizen, Star) for high‑precision components.
- Automated cells with robotic part loaders or pallet changers.
- Gear shaping, hobbing, and high‑speed skiving techniques.
- CMM measurement and interpretation of gear reports.
- Dyer gauges and MOW/MBW gear measurement.
