Machine Learning Engineer (AI Lab R37)

About the role

R1 is an AI innovation lab (R37) building technology to transform healthcare, with its flagship platform Phare OS improving pre-bill workflows such as authorization, utilization management, documentation and coding. As a Machine Learning Engineer you will bridge research and production, building and optimizing machine learning infrastructure and scalable AI systems. The role is open to levels L2 through Staff, with a preference for a hybrid setup (3 days onsite) at the SOHO office hub in New York City.

Key responsibilities

• Design and develop scalable AI systems for retrieval, ranking, categorization and generative AI over large-scale unstructured healthcare data
• Design, build and operate AI/ML systems end-to-end, from problem framing and model selection to production deployment and ongoing improvement
• Define AI abstractions and system architectures that are scalable, explainable and maintainable
• Design ranking and triage models that route work between AI agents and human operators
• Work with software engineers, product managers, clinicians and operators to deliver measurable business value

Required profile

• Strong experience designing, building and deploying production AI/ML systems and services
• Experience building and scaling 0 to 1 AI products from prototype to production
• Experience with model evaluation, benchmarking, experiment tracking, validation and ML lifecycle management
• Experience developing large-scale AI applications involving retrieval systems, ranking models, generative AI or similar technologies
• Ability to collaborate across teams and turn complex business problems into scalable AI solutions
• Preferred: healthcare data, healthcare technology or revenue cycle management experience, and mentoring experience

What we offer

• Base pay of $140,000 to $270,000 depending on level (L2 to Staff), with a bonus starting at 10%
