Machine Learning Automation Research Engineer

About the role

Amentum is hiring a full-time Machine Learning Automation Research Engineer at the Air Force Research Laboratory, Edwards AFB, CA. The role supports research and application of efficient, data-driven machine learning tools that improve predictive and autonomous capabilities for space propulsion systems, covering chemical and electric propulsion thrusters.

Key responsibilities

• Develop algorithms, quantify uncertainty, analyze data, fuse sensors and remotely control test articles
• Support basic research in uncertainty quantification and algorithm development
• Carry out applied technology work including software-in-the-loop and hardware-in-the-loop testing and analysis for in-house research and flight demonstrations
• Prepare written reports describing methods, analysis and results of experiments

Required profile

• MS or equivalent experience in computer science, machine learning, aerospace engineering, mathematics or data science
• United States citizen who can obtain a security clearance
• Valid driver's license; shift 9-80
• Ability to collaborate in a multidisciplinary agile team and communicate well, written and verbally

Required skills

• Programming in Python, MATLAB, C or C++ and software design best practices
• Mathematics, statistics or probability; dynamical, nonlinear or chaotic systems
• Anomaly detection, causal inference, deep learning, reinforcement learning, imitation learning, optimization, state estimation or unsupervised learning
• PyTorch, TensorFlow or similar ML frameworks
• Feedback control systems with real-time telemetry, SIL/HIL simulation and hardware-in-the-loop testing
• Sensor fusion such as Kalman filtering and autonomy hardware integration
