Legal Officer – United Nations Appeals Tribunal

About the role

The Legal Officer will support the Registry of the United Nations Appeals Tribunal (UNAT) in New York, reporting to the UNAT Registrar and Principal Registrar. The role involves providing legal analysis, research, and advice on a wide range of international and administrative law matters.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct extensive legal research, prepare case studies, briefs, reports and correspondence on constitutional, international, public, private, administrative and employment law.
• Draft and review legal documents, indictments, motions, and legal opinions covering UN Charter, treaties, privileges and immunities, and procedural issues.
• Assist in representing the Organization before arbitral and tribunal proceedings, acting as junior co‑counsel or supporting judges in drafting judgments.
• Provide legal advice on human‑resources and administrative matters and guide junior staff.

Required profile

• Advanced university degree (Master’s) in international law or equivalent experience.
• Minimum five years of legal experience, including at least two years in administrative or employment law.
• Experience in a judicial or tribunal setting, drafting appellate briefs, or legal clerkship is desirable.
• Fluency in English (required); French is desirable.
