Legal Editor I – Legislative Documents

About the role
The Texas Legislative Council is seeking a Legal Editor I to ensure the accuracy and proper formatting of legislative documents, code revisions, and council correspondence. This role involves close collaboration with drafting attorneys, research staff, and other council personnel to maintain high editorial standards.
Key responsibilities
- Edit council‑produced documents for grammar, spelling, legal citation accuracy, and correct form.
- Work with drafting attorneys and research staff to align documents with council style and House and Senate rules.
- Read drafts and bills against current law and prepare legislation for engrossment and enrollment.
- Incorporate amendments into bills and prepare certification pages for enrollment.
- Review enrolled bills and update the statutes database after each legislative session.
- Edit code revisions and council publications during interim periods.
- Participate in interim work groups and perform other duties as assigned.
Required profile
- Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in English, journalism, a foreign language, or a related field.
- Copyediting or proofreading experience preferred.
- Ability to work independently, meet tight deadlines, and maintain meticulous attention to detail.
- Professional appearance, demeanor, and ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Willingness to work overtime, weekends, on‑call, and occasional late nights without notice.
Required skills
- Thorough knowledge of language, vocabulary, grammar, and spelling.
- High‑level reading comprehension and analytical abilities.
- Proficiency with council software applications and reference materials.
