Legal Counsel

About the role

Medgar Evers College is seeking a full‑time Legal Counsel to provide comprehensive legal support across all college operations. Based on the Brooklyn campus, the Counsel will work closely with senior leadership, academic units, and external partners to safeguard the institution’s interests.

Key responsibilities

• Review, draft, and negotiate contracts and agreements, ensuring protection of institutional interests and compliance with Title VI law.
• Prepare and maintain legal documents, policies, memoranda, compliance reports, and governance materials.
• Advise on legal issues related to operations, governance, employment, and regulatory compliance.
• Identify legal risks, recommend practical solutions, and ensure adherence to applicable laws, regulations, and CUNY policies.
• Collaborate with senior leadership and departmental heads; coordinate with outside counsel when specialized expertise is required.

Required profile

• Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
• Admission to practice law in a U.S. jurisdiction; New York bar admission or eligibility strongly preferred.
• Experience providing legal counsel in higher education, public sector, or nonprofit environments.
• Excellent analytical, written, and verbal communication skills with strong attention to detail.
• Ability to work collaboratively, manage multiple matters simultaneously, and maintain confidentiality and ethical standards.
