Lead Network Engineer (Remote Opportunity)

About the role

VetsEZ is seeking a Lead Network Engineer to support the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) network infrastructure for VistA, the VA Enterprise Cloud (VAEC) AWS environment and the VA Wide Area Network. The role leads the network engineering team and plans, designs, implements, maintains and evaluates enterprise networks supporting VistA and cloud-hosted VA systems. Candidates must live in the continental US.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and direct the network engineering team, assign and prioritize tasks and give technical guidance.
• Design, implement and maintain the VistA network infrastructure in line with VA and federal government IT standards.
• Provide ongoing operational support and maintenance of the VAEC AWS cloud and the VA WAN, following security standards and best practices.
• Oversee network architecture design and plan new network resources and applications, including cloud connectivity.
• Plan, support and evaluate complex network systems, recommend resources to maintain or expand service levels, and perform capacity planning with monthly metrics on availability and bandwidth usage.
• Monitor network interfaces and performance, troubleshoot issues and make changes to improve uptime and security.
• Handle escalated network problems, work with other IS groups and cross-functional IT teams, and develop technical standards and interface applications.
• Plan and perform network equipment OS and version upgrades, and keep network diagrams, procedures and documentation current.
• Support compliance with government security and operational standards, and apply SAFe/Agile principles to deliver work iteratively.
• Manage customer relationships, interface with internal and external customers and vendors, and present network designs, changes and status to clients and stakeholders.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, electronics engineering or another engineering or technical discipline; 8 years of additional relevant experience may substitute for the degree.
• 5+ years of experience.
• Experience as a Network Engineer supporting government IT contracts, including design, implementation and troubleshooting.
• Experience leading and directing other network engineers and overseeing day-to-day team operations.
• Experience in network planning, engineering and architecture, including capacity planning and evaluating new network products.
• Demonstrated experience in SAFe/Agile environments.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presenting technical information to non-technical stakeholders.

Required skills

• AWS cloud networking and wide area networks, including connectivity to cloud resources.
• Proficiency with network diagrams and network management tools for discovery and mapping.
• Experience supporting VistA, VAEC and the VA WAN, and preferably VA or other federal healthcare IT environments.
• Relevant certifications such as CCNA or CCNP.
• Additional: experience with AI-assisted tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Microsoft 365 Copilot) for drafting configurations, scripts and documentation, and establishing team practices for AI-assisted network engineering.
