Lead Infrastructure Engineer

About the role

Commerce, the parent company of BigCommerce, Feedonomics and Makeswift, is looking for a Lead Infrastructure Engineer to design, build, automate and operate infrastructure across its on-prem data centers and GCP environments. The role suits someone who grew up in hands-on operations and now leads infrastructure, sets technical direction, mentors engineers and owns the systems that scale global operations. The position is remote.

Key responsibilities

• Design and operate large-scale, multi-data-center infrastructure spanning on-prem hardware, GCP and AWS
• Lead automation of infrastructure deployment and configuration management, moving from legacy tooling to modern IaC (Terraform, Puppet, Ansible)
• Design and maintain traffic management, load balancing and DNS systems at scale
• Build and operate monitoring and observability systems across on-prem and cloud environments
• Develop tooling for managing distributed, auditable systems administration
• Write and maintain process, policy and procedural documentation for the infrastructure organization

Required profile

• 10+ years in infrastructure or systems engineering, including direct operational ownership of production systems
• Experience remotely managing physical hardware infrastructure at hosting facilities
• Proven track record of automating infrastructure and leading projects while mentoring engineers
• Preferred: experience migrating on-prem workloads to public cloud, mentoring junior engineers, and distributed monitoring/logging stacks

Required skills

• Deep Linux systems administration (Red Hat, Debian or similar) at scale
• Core networking: Cisco hardware, DNS, load balancing, traffic management
• Enterprise storage and backup systems
• Ansible, Puppet or similar; Python or a similar language for automation
• GCP (Compute Engine, networking, storage, IAM); preferred Kubernetes/GKE

The stated national base salary range is $110,000-$186,000, depending on experience, skills and location. The company is remote-first, with optional workspaces for team members in Austin, Atlanta and London.
