Lead AI Software Engineer

About the role

Commerce, the parent company of BigCommerce, Feedonomics and Makeswift, is looking for a Lead AI Software Engineer to shape and execute its AI vision. You will lead the design and implementation of several AI-based product solutions, collaborating with senior Product and Engineering leaders. The role is remote-first.

Key responsibilities

• Interface with team members, executives and stakeholders to give context, set direction and provide technical guidance.
• Contribute to and author high-level designs and partner with leaders on strategic alignment.
• Serve as lead engineer for major initiatives, developing and implementing low-level designs across teams.
• Build scalable, secure, cost-effective and performant solutions at very large scale, and deliver quick-turnaround solutions for urgent needs.
• Shape the AI strategy with Product and Engineering leadership, assess technology options and select those that optimise ROI.
• Evaluate and evangelize technologies, identify opportunities for experimentation and upskill the organization.

Required profile

• Significant experience architecting and shipping agentic AI systems in production, beyond prototypes.
• Experience building product solutions with LLMs and GenAI technologies.
• Demonstrated technical leadership across cross-functional teams, driving vision and execution without formal authority.
• Preferred: experience with product data pipelines, e-commerce taxonomies and schemas.
• Preferred: Bachelor's degree in CS, EE, SW, CE, MIS or equivalent experience.

Required skills

• Deep knowledge of RAG pipelines, MCP, AI agents, multimodal LLMs, prompt orchestration, LLM telemetry and inspection.
• Server-side engineering in Python, Go, Java or similar.
• Cloud platforms (AWS, GCP or Azure), API architecture and modern MLOps.
• SQL, in-memory storage and similar data stores.
• Familiarity with vector databases, model orchestration tools, inference frameworks and cloud-native ML workflows preferred.
• Familiarity with Angular, React and similar frontend frameworks preferred.

Pay transparency range: $182,000 - $259,000, depending on experience, skills, qualifications and location. Variable compensation, equity and benefits may apply.
