Journey Level Mechanic

About the role

AC Transit is seeking experienced automotive mechanics to join its team as Journey Level Mechanics. Candidates will work on a variety of bus and coach components, receiving training on diesel and large‑vehicle systems while supporting the largest bus agency in California.

Key responsibilities

• Diagnose, inspect, and repair defective coach components, including engines, transmissions, brakes, air suspension, pneumatic systems, and electrical systems.
• Perform major overhauls, tune‑ups, and preventative maintenance on bus systems and passenger lifts.
• Replace windows, seats, and conduct minor body repairs.
• Operate buses for on‑site diagnostics and move disabled vehicles.
• Use forklifts, overhead cranes, hydraulic lifts, brake lathes, and other equipment to service vehicles.
• Document all work performed and submit daily and weekly reports.

Required profile

• High school diploma (or equivalent) and completion of the District’s state‑certified 4‑year Apprentice Training program (8 levels) OR comparable experience.
• 4–7 years of automotive mechanic experience; diesel experience not required.
• Ability to operate heavy‑equipment such as forklifts, cranes, and lifts.
• Strong communication with transportation, maintenance, and materials staff.
