Java Developer - COBOL Modernization Project

About the role

Helpware is looking for a Java Developer to join a large-scale enterprise modernization initiative that transforms legacy COBOL/CICS applications into a modern Java-based architecture. The project is in the healthcare industry, with detailed technical specifications and experienced engineering teams. It is fully remote, open to candidates in Mexico or South America, and runs for 8-12 months with possible extension.

Key responsibilities

• Develop Java-based solutions according to detailed technical specifications provided by subject matter experts.
• Implement Java Enterprise components, including handlers, Enterprise JavaBeans (EJBs) and Data Access Objects (DAOs).
• Develop business logic and database interaction layers.
• Create and optimize SQL queries and database integrations.
• Write, execute and maintain unit tests, and deliver clean, documented code following established coding standards.
• Take part in code reviews and support integration activities.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure project delivery.

Required profile

• 5+ years of commercial Java development experience.
• Strong Java, COBOL and enterprise application development background.
• Experience with Actian DataConnect (version 11.5 or higher preferred) for building and maintaining integration maps and processes.
• HIPAA X12 EDI experience (834, 835, 837, 270/271, 276/277), including X12-to-XML transformation.
• Comfortable working within an established application architecture; healthcare payer experience strongly preferred, Medicare/Medicaid a plus.
• English level B2 or better.
