Industrial Automation Specialist

About the role

Gerdau is hiring an Automation Specialist in Wilton, Iowa, within its Production & Operations area. The specialist installs, maintains and replaces automation systems across the production process, troubleshoots industrial process control systems, instrumentation, robotic assembly devices and computer-controlled equipment, and acts as a subject matter expert advising leadership on automation capabilities and future opportunities.

Key responsibilities

• Install, modify and program complex closed-loop and digital electronic equipment, including PLC programming and HMI systems
• Troubleshoot and repair industrial process control systems, instrumentation, robotic assembly devices and computer-controlled equipment
• Check and calibrate plant instrumentation, including reheat furnaces and melt shop electronic systems, and document emergency system tests for compliance
• Interpret schematics and blueprints, research and help source equipment, parts and digital solutions
• Work with diagnostic tools such as digital voltmeters, multimeters and oscilloscopes, and use analyzers, calculators, meters and electronic probes to diagnose faults
• Plan and assist engineers and plant leadership with equipment installation and modification projects, and coordinate maintenance employees and contractors
• Follow PPE and safety rules, and train others on electrical systems, PLCs, HMIs and networks

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED; associate or bachelor's degree in mechanical or electrical engineering, automation technology, robotics or a closely related field preferred
• 10 years of heavy industrial electrical maintenance experience preferred
• Experience in an industrial environment
• Physical ability to climb ladders, work in extreme heat, noise up to 120 dB and cramped spaces, and work shift schedules including nights and weekends, with call-ins for emergencies

Required skills

• Advanced PLC programming, networking and troubleshooting (Rockwell and ABB)
• FactoryTalk HMI system configuration
• Expert knowledge of motors, drives, pneumatics and hydraulics
• Strong math, computer and electrical skills, blueprint reading, and familiarity with hand tools
