About the role
The Chicago Urban League is seeking a HUD Certified Housing Counselor to provide comprehensive housing counseling services across homeownership, rental, and foreclosure prevention. Reporting to the Vice President of Housing & Financial Empowerment, the counselor will act as a trusted financial coach, helping clients achieve their housing and financial goals.
Key responsibilities
- Deliver one‑on‑one counseling on pre‑purchase requirements, foreclosure prevention, rental options, and financial coaching.
- Maintain accurate client files and program records in compliance with contractual and grant requirements.
- Manage data integrity in the Counselor Max database and other client management systems.
- Participate in educational housing programs, workshops, and seminars, both virtual and in‑person.
- Prepare timely reports for audits, contract reviews, and funder requirements.
- Assist with on‑site and off‑site housing fairs and outreach events.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution or 2‑4 years equivalent experience in housing counseling or a related field.
- HUD Housing Counseling Certification (preferred) and certifications in foreclosure prevention, homeownership education, or rental counseling are a plus.
- Strong interpersonal skills, ability to communicate constructively, and a sense of urgency in case management.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and manage time effectively.

- Proficiency in Microsoft Word
- Proficiency in Microsoft PowerPoint
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel
- Experience with database software (e.g., Counselor Max)
