Home Care Worker

About the role

The Institute on Aging (IOA) is looking for a Home Care Worker to provide direct services to frail elders in their homes, under the direction and supervision of the Community Services Department. IOA offers over 23 programs that help aging adults and adults with disabilities stay healthy, independent and connected to their community.

Key responsibilities

• Provide personal care and assistance in the participant's home, helping them live safely and comfortably, including bathing, peri-care, mouth, skin and hair care, eating, toileting and ambulation
• Perform homemaker tasks such as laundry and meal preparation, including special diets and meal setup at the center or to take home
• Escort clients to and from medical appointments and provide behavioral or emotional support, such as reminders about nursing care, diet restrictions and reality orientation
• Assist with cue glucose tests, blood pressure checks and collection of urine, sputum and other samples
• Keep care areas clean and safe, report participants' status and progress, keep statistical records and attend staff meetings
• May assist with special programs, help train volunteers and staff, and promote good relations with participants, families and the community
• Work a flexible schedule seven days a week, including some weekends, across all San Francisco districts

Required profile

• At least one year of experience working with older adults, paid or unpaid
• Ability to lift, transfer, move and reposition 35 lbs, and to reach, bend and walk
• Ability to comprehend complex written material and give clear spoken English
• Interest in working with frail elders and willingness to work in a multilingual, multicultural environment

Desired qualifications

• Certified Nursing Assistant training and current certification
• Spanish, Russian, Vietnamese, Korean or Chinese
• Knowledge of the community served

Pay is $23 per hour.
