Histotechnologist II – Surgical Pathology

About the role

The Surgery department at the University of Miami seeks a Histotechnologist II to prepare tissue specimens from surgical and research samples for histology, electron microscopy, and immunohistochemistry. The role involves using laboratory and hospital systems to manage data, maintain equipment, and ensure high‑quality diagnostic preparations.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare tissue specimens for microscopic examination, including complex immunohistochemistry cases.
• Maintain and review quality control across laboratory facilities.
• Determine acceptability of test results and instrument performance.
• Maintain equipment, order reagents and materials, and keep detailed sample records.
• Accession clinical and research specimens in the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
• Perform gross examination of surgical biopsies and identify specific structures such as glomeruli in fresh kidney specimens.
• Provide guidance and leadership to section staff and recommend process improvements.
• Handle patient and clinical concerns confidentially and with discretion.

Required profile

• Associate’s degree in a relevant field.
• ASCP Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL) certification.
• Florida Clinical Laboratory Technologist license.
• Minimum of 3 years of relevant laboratory experience.
