Heavy Equipment / Fleet Mechanic (Airport Equipment)

About the role

Swissport, a global leader in aviation services, is hiring a Heavy Equipment and Fleet Mechanic in East Elmhurst, New York. The role covers inspecting, diagnosing, repairing and maintaining a wide range of airport support vehicles and equipment. No aviation experience is required; training on airport-specific equipment and systems is provided.

Key responsibilities

• Operate and drive all types of GSE equipment, motorized and non-motorized
• Carry out preventive maintenance on schedule and troubleshoot ground support equipment
• Remove faulty equipment from service and keep it out of service until repaired
• Respond to emergency service calls and accidents involving ground support equipment
• Complete maintenance and repair documentation and comply with security requirements
• Keep the GSE shop clean, fuel equipment safely and liaise with ramp management and customers
• Report to shop leads daily and work as a self-starter

Required profile

• Experience in heavy equipment, diesel engines, commercial trucks, agricultural or construction equipment, fleet maintenance or automotive diagnostics
• Valid driver's license, held in good standing
• Trade school training or a mechanical background preferred
• Willingness to travel for training or to help other stations, and to work outside in all weather conditions, including deicing training and overtime during weather emergencies

Required skills

• Hydraulic knowledge or willingness to learn hydraulic systems
• Good oral and verbal communication and computer skills
