Heating, Ventilation and A/C Technician

About the role

The Heating, Ventilation and A/C Technician provides on‑site leadership and technical expertise for the HVAC shop within the United Nations Headquarters. Reporting to the Shop Foreperson and General Foreperson, the role ensures safe, high‑quality installation, maintenance and repair of HVAC/R systems across the complex.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and coordinate junior technicians and support staff, assigning and prioritising work tasks.
• Respond to phone and radio calls, schedule Building Management System (BMS) usage for meetings, and address work‑order requests.
• Perform complex troubleshooting, repair, maintenance and installation of HVAC/R equipment, including AHUs, FCUs, VRF indoor units, split systems, VAV boxes, unit heaters, exhaust fans and refrigeration appliances.
• Diagnose advanced electrical, mechanical and refrigerant faults using diagnostic tools.
• Conduct field training, demonstrations and technical coaching for junior technicians.
• Prepare technical recommendations, condition reports and improvement proposals for supervisors.
• Ensure compliance with UN safety rules, technical standards, equipment procedures and applicable building codes.
• Coordinate with other trades, project teams and contractors as needed.

Required profile

• Experience working independently on complex HVAC/R systems in a large facilities environment.
• Ability to provide technical direction and mentorship to junior staff.
• Strong commitment to safety compliance and professional conduct.
• Effective communication skills for reporting to supervisors and collaborating with other trades.
