Health Information Management Technician (Level 1)

About the role

The University of Miami/UHealth Health Information Management Department is seeking a full‑time HIM Technician 1 to support the maintenance and availability of patient electronic health records in Miami, FL. The technician ensures that medical information is accurate, complete, and ready for providers during patient visits.

Key responsibilities

• Retrieve, prepare, and scan discharge and visit documentation from assigned units daily.
• Remove staples, paper clips, and other obstructions; repair torn documents before scanning.
• Scan and index documents into the Electronic Health System, linking them to the correct patient, encounter, and document type.
• Process electronic files from multifunction devices or email according to departmental procedures.
• Provide coverage for at least one satellite facility as needed.
• Maintain departmental quality and productivity standards.

Required profile

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum six months of experience handling medical records or related documentation.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
• Strong attention to detail and adherence to legal, ethical, and regulatory requirements.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems.
• Experience operating document scanning equipment and multifunction devices.
• Knowledge of record indexing and filing procedures.
