French Translator – NYC Public Schools

About the role

The Office of Language Access within the New York City Department of Education is seeking a French Translator to support communication with Limited‑English‑Proficient families. The role focuses on translating, editing, and proofreading a variety of school‑related documents and may include interpreting duties.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare accurate French‑to‑English and English‑to‑French translations of NYCPS documents for distribution to parents and communities.
• Utilize translation software, word‑processing, desktop‑publishing, and workflow‑management tools to streamline the translation process.
• Review and edit vendor‑provided or internally produced translations for grammar, style, and consistency.
• Represent NYCPS in matters related to French language and culture.
• Provide simultaneous and consecutive interpretation at scheduled events, using interpreting equipment as needed.
• Offer over‑the‑phone interpreting or sight‑translation on an occasional basis.

Required profile

• Proficiency in translating and interpreting French and English with professional accuracy.
• Either a high school diploma plus two years of full‑time translation/interpretation experience, or a bachelor’s degree with at least 24 semester credits in French, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
