Freelance Thumbnail Designer

About the role

Airrack, a team behind ambitious, innovative YouTube videos, is looking for a freelance thumbnail designer who understands how to design for attention and can deliver high click-through-rate thumbnails. The role is project-based, paid by a base fee per project plus performance bonuses.

Key responsibilities

• Concept and design high-performing thumbnails for long-form and short-form YouTube videos
• Collaborate with the creative director and editors to understand the story and emotional beats of each video
• Rapidly generate, iterate and test concepts under tight deadlines
• Keep up with YouTube thumbnail trends and experiment with new styles
• Optimize every thumbnail for mobile and desktop viewing

Required profile

• Strong portfolio of YouTube thumbnails with proven performance or mock-ups showing mastery of the format
• Deep knowledge of YouTube best practices, CTR metrics and audience behavior
• Ability to work quickly and independently while maintaining high visual standards
• Great visual storytelling instincts and an eye for composition, color and facial expression

Required skills

• Proficiency in Photoshop or similar design software
• Preferred: familiarity with analytics tools to optimize content performance
• Preferred: experience in frenetic lifestyle and prank content, and experience managing a team of editors
