About the role
The Fisheries Biologist II provides essential support for the NOAA SEFSC Fisheries Statistics Division by managing electronic and paper logbooks for Highly Migratory Species and Coastal Fisheries, and by leading the implementation and testing of the SEFSC Fisheries Electronic Reporting System (FERS).
Key responsibilities
- Distribute paper logbooks to permit holders via U.S. mail and process incoming mail on scheduled days.
- Validate, stamp, code, and schedule logbooks, ensuring compliance before scanning.
- Review scanned data, correct errors, and communicate with permit holders by phone or mail.
- Monitor the permit‑holder phone line daily and respond to inquiries within four business days.
- Generate PINs and send FERS registration instructions weekly.
- Test new versions of the eTrips application within 14 days of release.
- Query and analyze logbook data using SQL, SAS, or R to improve QA/QC processes.
- Extract and summarize electronic reporting data, delivering reports within seven days of request.
- Participate in public outreach and provide electronic logbook training for new hires.
- Present FERS information at management, council, and scientific meetings, submitting presentations for approval five days in advance.
Required profile
- BS degree in fisheries, biology, or a related field.
- At least three years of relevant experience.
- Proficiency with common word‑processing, database, and statistical software.
