About the role
The Fisheries Biologist I provides electronic reporting support for NOAA SEFSC Fisheries Statistics Division. You will manage the distribution, receipt, data entry, validation, and quality control of commercial fishermen logbooks for highly migratory species, coastal fisheries, and wreckfish.
Key responsibilities
- Distribute logbooks annually via U.S. mail and ensure correct forms are included.
- Travel locally in a government vehicle to collect incoming logbooks from the post office.
- Process incoming logbooks: stamp, organize, assign schedule numbers, and enter data.
- Monitor a permit‑holder phone line, responding to inquiries within four business days.
- Mail wreckfish logbooks and dealer reporting forms by March 20 each year.
- Validate and quality‑control all entered data, completing processing within 46 calendar days.
- Participate in SEFSC outreach events such as open houses and career fairs.
- Prepare and submit monthly and annual status reports to the Fisheries Monitoring Branch chief.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree in Marine Science or a related field, or three years of relevant experience.
- Experience collecting catch and effort information from commercial fishers is preferred.
Required skills
- Proficiency with common word‑processing software.
- Experience using database applications.
- Familiarity with statistical analysis programs.
- Ability to work with graphics software for reporting.
