Financial Counseling Representative

About the role

R1 is hiring an on-site Financial Counseling Representative for St. Joseph's Hospital in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, working PRN shifts from 8am to 5pm. The counselor helps uninsured and underinsured patients understand their coverage and financial assistance options, traveling regularly between hospital floors and meeting patients in their rooms. The listed pay is $18-$19 per hour.

Key responsibilities

• Travel between multiple hospital floors and visit patients in their rooms to review their financial needs and available resources.
• Screen for eligibility for Medicaid, Marketplace coverage, hospital financial assistance and other programs.
• Help patients complete applications and gather required documents.
• Explain coverage options, application steps and next steps clearly.
• Discuss estimated patient responsibility and payment options, and support respectful collection of amounts due.
• Track application status, follow up on missing information and document activity accurately.
• Protect patient privacy and work with clinical, Patient Access and revenue cycle teams.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED.
• Strong customer service, communication and interpersonal skills.
• Compassion and professionalism when discussing sensitive personal and financial information.
• Ability to explain complex information simply and to handle multiple systems and priorities.
• Ability to work on-site, move between floors and meet patients in their rooms during the day.

Preferred qualifications

• Experience in financial counseling, eligibility, Patient Access, registration, patient financial services or revenue cycle.
• Knowledge of Medicaid, Marketplace coverage or hospital financial assistance programs.
• Experience completing eligibility screenings, applications or supporting documentation.
